The Austro-Hungarian Empire was a dual monarchy that encompassed large swaths of central and southern Europe that included the modern-day nations of Austria and Hungary. Franz Joseph I served as the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary at the same time. Joseph I held the title of Emperor of Austria from 1848 until his death in 1916 and was King of Hungary from 1867 until 1916.

20 Korona Gold Coins from Hungary were issued by the Austrian Mint in 1892 to mark the 25th anniversary of Joseph I’s ascension to the throne as King of Hungary in 1867. During the reign of Franz Joseph I, the constitution of Hungary was restored and he was crowned King of Hungary as a result.

The obverse side of the 20 Korona Gold Coins in this listing feature the left-profile figure of Franz Joseph I as he stands wearing a crown on his head. There is a scepter resting on his right shoulder and his left hand extends clutching a sphere. This design is unique to the Korona coinage of Hungary and was never used on Austrian Krones.

On the reverse of the 20 Korona Hungarian Gold Coins is a design known simultaneously as the crowned arms of Hungary and the coat of arms of the Habsburgs. The House of Habsburg ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire from its founding until it was dissolved after its defeat in World War I. The central crowned shield comes from the Habsburgs, and the addition of the angelic messengers supporting it forms the royal arms of Hungary.

All 20 Korona Gold Coins listed here are available in protective plastic. The coins were struck by the Austrian Mint, the official sovereign mint today of the Republic of Austria. The mint was founded in 1194 by Duke Leopold V and is one of Europe’s oldest operating sovereign mints.
