The British Gold Sovereign can be traced back to 1817. However, since they became bullion coins, only one monarch has appeared on these coins, Queen Elizabeth II. However, with her passing in September of 2022, these coins will now feature the effigy of King Charles III.
The obverse field of the 2022 British Memorial Sovereign features the effigy of King Charles III. The King is seen in left-profile relief, which is the opposite side his mother faced. Designed by Martin Jennings, the King is seen with no crown.
The reverse side of the 2022 Gold Memorial Sovereign showcases the Royal Arms of England. The Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland are propping up the shield, which is also topped by a royal crown. The shield shows the coats of arms for England, Ireland, and Scotland.
This 2022 British Gold Memorial Sovereign will arrive in a protective plastic slab issued by the NGC. These gold coins have been given a grade of MS69 which indicates a near-perfect specimen with its full, original mint luster, and no more than 2 minor detractions. These coins are designated as DPL, meaning deep proof-like. This means you’ll notice hints of frosted devices and mirror-like fields.
