The American Gold Buffalo is the only 24-karat gold coin produced annually by the United States. First released in 2006, it was the debut .9999 fine gold coin from the US Mint and marked a new chapter in American bullion. James Earle Fraser was the designer of the Buffalo Nickel, the inspiration for the American Gold Buffalo. Beyond the Buffalo nickel, Fraser’s contributions to American numismatics included designing the Victory medal for World War I veterans and the Navy Cross medal. His artistic approach to coin design emphasized authentic American imagery and indigenous themes, drawing from his childhood experiences on the frontier. Fraser’s work is celebrated for capturing the spirit of the American West while elevating coin design to fine art.

Fraser created this portrait by merging the facial characteristics of three different Indigenous tribal leaders he had met in the early 20th century, making it one of the earliest instances of Indigenous representation on American coinage.

This animal was modeled after Black Diamond, a well-known bison housed at the Central Park Zoo in New York City at the time.
